Art in Prisons, 1987 - 95

Between 1987 and 1995 the Bedford Hill Gallery brought art to prisons across the country.

The idea behind the project was to “bring some colour into prisoners’ lives”. The project was approved by the Home Office and supported by HM Prison Service. At the time 50 prisons across the country wanted to take part in the scheme. The Bedford Hill Gallery managed through fundraising to put up art exhibitions in 15 prisons. Paintings by London based artists, including a number of works by Prince Charles, were exhibited in prisons, and the response from prison inmates and staff was highly positive.
